Wolf Creek Dam

The Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is one of the largest trout hatcheries in the United States, producing millions of rainbow and brown trout each year. Free to visit, the hatchery offers self-guided tours where you can see trout at every stage of development — a fascinating stop for kids and adults alike.

The cold, clear water released from the base of Wolf Creek Dam creates one of the premier tailwater trout fisheries in the entire Southeast. The Cumberland River below the dam is stocked regularly and draws fly fishers and spin anglers from across the country chasing trophy rainbow and brown trout.

The area around Wolf Creek Dam and the river below is a magnet for wildlife. Bald eagles are commonly spotted perching and hunting along the Cumberland River, especially in winter and early spring — making this one of the best eagle-watching spots in Kentucky.

Walking across the top of Wolf Creek Dam offers panoramic views in both directions — the vast expanse of Lake Cumberland on one side and the winding Cumberland River valley below on the other. It’s one of the most dramatic and photogenic vantage points in all of south-central Kentucky.

Both the dam tours and the fish hatchery are completely free to visit and well-suited for families with children. The hatchery’s visitor center features interactive exhibits about aquatic ecosystems and fish life cycles — educational, engaging, and a great rainy-day alternative.
