Poker Run on Lake Cumberland

Poker Run on Lake Cumberland

Fast Boats, Big Music & Non-Stop Action — Ranked Among the Best Poker Runs in America

Kentucky’s Premier Powerboat Events

Lake Cumberland is home to not one but two world-class poker runs every summer — both hosted at State Dock Marina in Jamestown and both drawing tens of thousands of spectators and hundreds of high-performance boats from across the country. Whether you’re a dedicated powerboat enthusiast or just want to experience the electric atmosphere of one of the Southeast’s most exciting water events, these are weekends unlike anything else in Kentucky.

A poker run is a boating event where participants travel by powerboat between multiple checkpoints on the lake, drawing a playing card at each stop. The best poker hand at the end wins big prizes — but the real draw is the spectacle of the boats themselves. Think 50-foot offshore catamarans, twin-engine go-fast boats, and some of the loudest, fastest, most jaw-dropping watercraft you’ve ever seen, all roaring across one of the most beautiful lakes in the country.

A-Frame of Mind is just 15–20 minutes from State Dock, making it the perfect home base for attending either event. Book early — cabins fill up weeks in advance during poker run weekends.

Two Events. One Legendary Lake.

Lake Cumberland hosts two distinct poker run events each summer — here’s what you need to know about each one.

Thunder Run

Organized and produced by the Lake Cumberland Powerboat Club and hosted out of State Dock Marina, the Thunder Run is the earlier of the two events — a high-energy poker run that kicks off summer powerboat season on the lake in spectacular fashion.

  • 2026 Dates: July 10–11, 2026
  • Hub: State Dock Marina, 6365 State Park Rd, Jamestown, KY 42629

Lake Cumberland Poker Run

The flagship event of the Lake Cumberland powerboat calendar — ranked among the top five poker runs in America. Hosted by State Dock Marina, this is the bigger of the two events and draws tens of thousands of spectators, hundreds of high-performance boats, big prize money, and legendary after-parties with live DJs.

  • 2026 Dates: September 11–12, 2026

  • From A-Frame of Mind: Approximately 15–20 minutes

What to Expect at the Events

Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, poker run weekend on Lake Cumberland is an experience you won’t forget.

The Boats

Hundreds of high-performance powerboats line the docks at State Dock — offshore catamarans, go-fast V-hulls, and twin-engine monsters that cost more than most houses. Even if you’ve never been to a poker run, the sheer spectacle of the boats alone is worth the trip.

Live Music & After Parties

The entertainment doesn’t stop when the boats come in. Poker run weekends feature live DJs, after-parties, and exclusive concerts well into the night. The Lake Cumberland Poker Run in September is especially known for its legendary after-parties at State Dock.

Spectator Friendly

You don’t need a boat to enjoy poker run weekend. Tens of thousands of spectators line the docks and shoreline each year to watch the boats come and go, browse the vendor area, grab food and drinks, and soak up the unbeatable atmosphere at State Dock Marina.

Big Prizes

Poker run participants compete for thousands of dollars in prize money awarded to the best poker hands collected across the lake’s checkpoints. Great sponsorships mean great giveaways — there are prizes and raffles throughout the entire weekend.

A Photographer’s Dream

Rows of gleaming, exotic powerboats against the backdrop of Lake Cumberland make poker run weekend one of the most photogenic events in Kentucky. Bring a good camera — you’ll want to capture every detail of these extraordinary machines up close at the docks.

Lake-Wide Action

The poker run course spans the entire lake, with checkpoints at multiple marinas. On run day you can watch from any point along the 1,200 miles of shoreline as boats blast past at full throttle — a thrilling sight whether you’re on the water or watching from land.
