Baugh Branch Trail

A Peaceful Forest Walk to a Stunning Lake Overlook — Inside Lake Cumberland State Park

About Baugh Branch Trail

Baugh Branch Trail is the longer of the two hiking trails inside Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, winding 1.6 miles one-way (3.3 miles out-and-back) through open forest before rewarding hikers with a steep climb to a scenic overlook of Lake Cumberland. It’s one of the most accessible and enjoyable hikes in the region — well-marked, family-friendly, and beautiful in every season.

The trail follows mostly level terrain through a spacious, open woodland where 360-degree visibility through the trees makes for a relaxing and unhurried walk. The final stretch steepens noticeably before arriving at the lake overlook and the Baugh Branch creek — a natural reward that makes the effort feel entirely worthwhile. The open forest canopy also makes this one of the best trails in the area for birding, with a wide variety of species visible throughout the year.

From A-Frame of Mind, the trailhead is approximately 20–25 minutes away, making Baugh Branch an easy and rewarding half-day outing — ideal for a morning hike before a lazy afternoon at the lake or cabin.

What Makes This Trail Special

A forested walk through open woodland, a rewarding lake view, and wildlife around every bend.

Lake Overlook at the Summit

The payoff at the end of the trail is a beautiful elevated overlook of Lake Cumberland. After an easy walk through the forest, the view opens up dramatically — a sweeping glimpse of the lake that feels like a genuine reward for the steep final push.

Open Forest & Wide Visibility

Unlike dense, enclosed forest trails, Baugh Branch passes through open woodland with wide sight lines in all directions — reviewers regularly note the relaxed, spacious feel and the sense that surprises from wildlife or terrain are unlikely. A genuinely calming walk.

Outstanding Birding

The open forest canopy and proximity to the lake make Baugh Branch one of the best birding trails in Russell County. Year-round residents include red-tailed hawks, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and wild turkey. Spring and summer bring cardinals, bluebirds, goldfinches, and hummingbirds.

Great for Families

With mostly flat terrain, a short total distance, and a clear destination, Baugh Branch is a great choice for families with younger children. The open forest keeps young hikers engaged, and the final overlook gives everyone a memorable payoff at the turnaround point.

Dog Friendly

Dogs are welcome on Baugh Branch Trail — just keep them on a leash. The open terrain and manageable distance make it an enjoyable outing for well-behaved dogs of all sizes. A great option for guests staying at A-Frame of Mind who are traveling with their four-legged companions.

Great Almost Year-Round

Baugh Branch is enjoyable from February through December. Fall is particularly spectacular as the forest turns golden along the trail. Spring brings wildflowers and birdsong. Summer offers shaded woodland walks, and winter reveals dramatic bare-branch views across the open forest all the way to the lake.
